My Tip of the Week: More Little Things to Brighten an Elderly Loved One`s Day

After planting your spring garden, why not create a new tradition with the elderly loved ones in your family. Make a garden of memories.

For my garden of memories, I included pictures of family members close to me, placing those photographs in a special scrapbook. Although a bit time consuming, I am labeling the photographs, so future generations will know who the faces belong to.

Record these special moments. When your elderly loved one shares stories of old, don`t turn away. Listen. Take the time to record these moments. You will cherish them later!

I place special letters, cards, and other tokens of love, in the special garden of memories scrapbook.

Last month I completed a Garden of Memories scrapbook, in memory of my special dad.

The theme for this scrapbook was a tribute to a special man - Walter W. Perkins. Throughout the scrapbook, I placed letters, get well cards from family members and friends, sympathy cards, birthday cards, pictures, and other trinkets, defining who my father was.

Now, I have a special booklet to show to my cherished friends and family members. When they ask about who he was, I can open the scrapbook, so they can see how he was during his illness, along with the sadness he fought so passionately, just before his death.

I am proud of this booklet and hope future generations will appreciate who he was, and what he became to me. My father taught me to appreciate the elderly. Mostly, he taught me that life can be difficult at times. It is truly how we respond to life, and interact with others that makes us human, dignified and kind. His courage, bravery, and his spunk taught me how to love, and to forgive. Make the most of your special moments!
